Most people can agree that learning the alphabet and being read to are beneficial things for any child. With that in mind it makes sense that we would try and kill two birds with one stone by making and reading books about the ABCs. However, what I also think a fair amount of us could agree on is that as adults, no matter how much we love reading, ABC Books can give us a case of the reading snoozes!
With three kids under the age of 8 I’ve read a lot of books, and more ABC books than I care to mention. While the classics like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom will always hit the ball out of the park, I’ve rounded up five great ABC books that will entertain your children and you, the lovely reader!
Adventures With Barefoot Critters by Teagan White
If beautiful artwork draws you to a story – you cannot go wrong with this book. The images in this book are gorgeous and just get better with every page. The story works on more than the alphabet as it also starts at the beginning of the calendar year (January) and and works through each month and accompanying seasons all the way back to the New Year again following along the adventures of some great woodland characters! I also can appreciate any ABC book that does not use Xylophone for X and Apple for A. As if I needed one more reason to love this book..the dedication reads: “For anyone who went out and explored while everyone else was bored.”
African Animals ABC: An Alphabet Safari by Sarah L. Schuette
My four year old is CRAZY about zoo and safari animals right now! If hand illustrations aren’t your favorite, that’s okay because this book is full of real photographs of all kinds of animals. P is for Pangolin which I will admit is a strange looking creature in this story! I love that each page has a short but interesting fact about the animal pictured and there are animals listed that even I wasn’t super familiar with. A great ABC read for any animal lover.
LMNO-Peas by Keith Baker
This book is a lot of fun – cute pictures with good rhythm and multiple words for each letter. This book uses peas as the main characters talking about all the things they are. Don’t just use this book to talk about the ABCs – use it to talk to your kids about who they are now and who they would like to be some day in the future! All three of my kiddos are drawn to this book and this mom ALMOST has it memorized.
The next 2 books will make you Laugh Out Loud!
These next two books are written along similar lines. Not only do they poke fun at traditional alphabet books, they will make your kids and you laugh together as your work your way through!
A Is For Musk Ox by Erin Cabatingan and Matthew Myers
The dialog between a well intended, if attention seeking Musk Ox and a Zebra narrator will have your kids giggling as you work your way through the ABCs in this book. This is one Musk Ox with a million reasons he should be all over the alphabet. Again this book gets extra points for having multiple words for each letter incorporated into the story, clever drawings, and even some great facts tucked into a story that will keep everyone’s attention. Who knew a Musk Ox could be so mischievous?
Z Is For Moose by Kelly Bingham and Paul O. Zelinsky
If the last book wasn’t silly enough for you, then the good news is this one will add to the laughing. I debated including two books that had quite a few similarities but my family and I enjoyed both of these stories so much it felt wrong to leave this one out. Again, the Zebra is the voice of reason when a rampant animal tries to take over the alphabet. However, how will moose feel when he finds a surprise at the letter M? I love that this story also incorporates elements of friendship and life skills that you can discuss with your little humans and ends on a heart warming note!
If you are looking for ways to read the ABCs without catching extra ZzZz-s then these books are definitely for you! I hope you will check them out from your local library or you can purchase them quickly from Amazon (click on the image of desired book above or find links below!)
