Wealth – we all want it. Okay, ALL is a very strong word. How about, wealth – most of us want it? Fair enough?
Yet sometimes wealth and the life of our dreams seem so out of reach. It is just one more hour of work away. It is just one more investment, one more purchase, one more….. you name it.
While I can’t promise you exact results as it varies by person, I did want to share with you the 10 tips for becoming wealthy I have found without selling a single item.
1. Take Care Of Your Physical Needs
If you want to become wealthy, you need to take steps to be healthy. (Hey, that rhymes!) You aren’t going to be able to enjoy a single bit of life’s riches if you are feeling like crap. Drink water, your body needs it. Get sleep because it needs that too. Find time to shower, eat food that fuels you, visit the doctor and dentist at least once a year!
Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in caring for the physical needs of our children, spouses, or other loved ones that we don’t take care of our own. Please – Please – Please – take care of your physical body because you only get one.
2. That Friend You Haven’t Talked To In Ages? Call Them.
I promise that calling – not texting, facebook messaging, emailing, or snapping – actual calling, won’t kill you. It won’t even be that painful. Lets be honest, if you pick someone you haven’t called in a while they will probably let you glide right through to voice mail!
Leave a message. Tell them you were thinking of them. Tell them how you are.
Now here comes the hard part.
Call them again in a week. Voicemail again? Leave another. If they answer – great!
Keep calling once a week until you have made up for lost time. Call until calling them to talk is natural. Call until you have one of those conversations that lasts way longer than you meant for it to. Call because you care. Call because hearing someone on the other end of the line – even if it is brief – is good for you both.
Call your friends. The worst that could happen is you get to freak them out a little, but more than likely you will kindle a connection you didn’t realize you were missing.
3. Volunteer Your Time
Pick something you feel passionate about, a hobby you enjoy, or a cause you support and get out and support it with your time.
You have to give to receive in life and even if you never receive a dime for your time spent helping others – you’ll receive something better. We need less social media warriors, and more physical hands and feet of helpers.
Not sure where to Volunteer? Check out VolunteerMatch.org! My daughter and I have found more than one volunteer opportunity through their site!
4. Hug Your Loved Ones
It’s no big secret that hugging has health benefits.
Health aside, hugging draws us closer to those we care about. It is a quick physical gesture of affection that sends many positive messages.
I know not everyone is a “hugger” and even I am particular about who I hug, but I also know that even the quickest of hugs enhances my children’s moods and my husband’s as well. Even if you don’t hug, making a conscious effort to show those you love that you do, can only bring in good things for you.
5. Learn Something New
Not that long ago, blogging was new to me! Wow, have I learned a lot in my first month – From how to host my very own site easily on Site Ground (seriously their customer service has been AMAZING -TRY IT) – to creating amazing images and content – and how to edit a site design from the always cute and useful Pretty Darn Cute designs!
Learning something new simply for the fact that I enjoy it has reminded me of what I’m capable of and keeps my passion for life running in full force. Add heading to school for a Master’s degree and I’m learning every day.
If you feel stuck in a rut, learning something new might be the thing that kick starts you in a new direction and if you are here hoping to find financial wealth – well it may just help with that too!
6. Eat The Dessert
Seriously, eat the dessert. Even if nobody else is. Even if you don’t “need” it. Eat it. Indulge. Don’t bring any guilt to the table.
Don’t eat JUST desserts but if you want a piece of that amazing cake from Cheesecake Factory and you haven’t eaten their in six months? GET IT! Eat it. Enjoy! Thank me later.
7. Plant a Garden
I never had a garden growing up. I didn’t even know what I was missing. Growing a garden fills your life with fresh, delicious, good for you foods. If you grow flowers you are creating something beautiful and good for the environment. A garden doesn’t care what your hair or your makeup looks like. It doesn’t complain if you don’t feel like talking. It just grows.
Getting down and dirty with the earth is good for us. It brings us back in line with nature and ourselves. The things you grow (even the weeds) can only serve to benefit you and the earth around you.
Seriously, if you want a life of wealth, grow a garden. Grow a small one in a pot, a big one in the ground, a cute one in your window! Just give it a try.
Here are some of my favorite garden ideas:
Now I know what you are thinking!
“Jess! How can I travel when all these things you’ve told me won’t fill my bank account or gas tank!?”
I get it. Travel is rarely free and traveling to amazing destinations is fun but has a cost. Don’t forget though, that you can travel without going far. I often load my kids up in the car for a one tank of gas sort of road trip. I travel to a local small town and wander it. I travel to visit a friend in a not-so-far off place.
As my boss used to say, “Sometimes we just need a change of place and a change of pace.” Amen!
Travel, whether its an hour from home or days enriches our lives by giving us new experiences, introducing us to new people, and adding to our world view. If you invest money in only one recreation – I strongly encourage it to be travel!
Here are a few destination ideas:
9. Stop Apologizing For Being Yourself
Seriously, you can’t flourish in life if you are constantly feeling bad for being yourself. I have kids and I want them to love and embrace the things that make them unique and wonderful. How can I do that if I spend all my time apologizing for the things that make me who I am?
Do you like silly puns? Do you snort when you laugh? Do you wear clothes that people don’t think ‘belong’ to your gender? Do you bite your nails? Do you! Stop apologizing.
Stop being sorry for not being perfect. Stop being sorry for being different.
It’s hard, but you can do it. The sooner you do, the richer you and your life will become.
10. Learn That Money Pays The Bills But Memories and Connections With The Ones Around Us Make Us Wealthy.
Some of you are probably annoyed. I haven’t told you how to make a single dollar. Some of you don’t get it.
The truth is, if you want to become truly wealthy for the rest of your life, you need to realize that while important – life is more than dollars in a bank account.
Life, meaning, wealth, happiness, richness – they are all a collection of the things we experience, the way we treat ourselves, the loved ones we surround ourselves with. I pity the man who has 1 million dollars and no friends or worse yet no passion.
Reach out to the world around you. Interact with it. Embrace yourself. Explore life.
These are the keys I’ve found to instant wealth and I bet if you follow them, you will find it too.
