It’s no secret that my family loves to hike and get outside. We have a blast and feel our best when we are out enjoying nature. While nature in itself is very entertaining – sometimes it is even better if you have a guide or nature journal to help explain exactly what you are surrounded by.
In this post I have listed 10 great nature guides for kids. Even if your kid isn’t a nature lover YET – they will be by the time they enjoy these books and journals. Some of these we have used ourselves and others I have experienced through friends and walking book store shelves. They all have great things to offer.
There are multiple books in the Fun With Nature series depending on where you are located or what you are interested in! Their main book Fun With Nature has great descriptive words and images of all the things you could see on most nature trails. The pictures are great and the activities are even better. They also have specific nature guides for kids on trees, wildflowers, birds, bugs, and much more! You really can’t go wrong with this series!
This book is a great size for sticking in your back pack or your child’s back pack! It is a simple to read and look through field guide that introduces many of the things your child may see on a walk through the woods – from wildlife and footprints to berries and fungi! This is a beautiful guide you and your children will love. They also sell Into The Field Guide: A Walk On The Beach.
I love this nature guide for kids because of its many hands on activities – it even comes with a mini-magnifying glass. This book contains guide information, checklists, pictures, and stickers. Its a fun hands-on book for your young explorer!
This one is great for the older kids in your group! As my oldest daughter has started to age and become more experienced with hiking, her interest in actual wilderness survival has gone up as well! This book is a great start to explaining outdoor skills that could last your child a life time!
Have a young one who loves birds? This is the book for them. This nature guide for kids works great as a first introduction to bird watching with the beautiful photos National Geographic has come to be known for and easy to read details on the birds in the book. A great starting point for any young bird watcher.
I just can’t get enough of this fun journal and field guide combo. It has tons of great activities that are presented in clear and interesting ways. Your kiddos will love the activities in this book from drawing and writing to observing nature all around them. This is truly a great purchase for any nature loving family!
This book is PACKED FULL of activities to do with young explorers. You could spend so much time outside just completing this one book! I know this book is used by a lot of home school families as a nature companion and they love it. I believe a website is also provided where you can print off more pages if needed for multiple kids!
Confession time!!! Before I started hiking with my kids I was SO UNEDUCATED about trees! Then my kids kept asking me what different kinds of trees were and I continuously had no idea. It was just a bit embarrassing. Still, I embraced this issue and we have started learning about trees together. My kids get to see that even adults can learn new things and this tree nature guide for kids is beautiful!
Do you have a bug lover? My four year old is constantly catching every bug she can – whether I like it or not! Trust me, I don’t really like it at all. Yet, who would I be to stop her love and fascination for the tiny things in life? They say if we want our kids to love the earth, we must first teach them to love the worm. Needless to say this book is right up her alley!
This list would not be complete without this beautiful board book for toddlers and preschoolers. This book is beautiful from cover to cover with a fun spinning wheel and durable build. Your smallest explorers will love reading through this with you in your favorite nature location.
